What Is a Hand Carry Shipment? (And When Air Freight Isn't Enough)
We've written before about how Air Freight turns your shipment into a guaranteed passenger in the cargo hold instead of a gamble on consolidated space. But there's a tier above even that — for the shipments where "guaranteed cargo hold space" still isn't a tight enough guarantee.
That tier is called hand carry.
What Hand Carry Actually Means
In a hand carry shipment, your package doesn't go into the cargo hold at all. It travels as accompanied baggage with a dedicated person — picked up from your location, carried by hand through check-in and security, flown in the cabin or as escorted baggage on the same flight as the carrier, and delivered by the same person directly to the recipient on arrival.
No sorting facility. No consolidation. No hand-off between departments or vendors. One person, one package, one flight, start to finish.
Why This Exists as a Separate Service
Even guaranteed Air Freight cargo hold space involves a chain: your package moves from pickup, to the cargo terminal, through security screening, onto a loading trolley, into the hold, off the hold at the destination, through customs or cargo release, and out to a delivery vehicle. Every one of those steps is reliable — but they are still steps, each with its own handling window.
For a narrow category of shipments, even that chain is one link too many:
- A legal document that must be filed before a court deadline, with zero tolerance for a missed connection
- A biological or lab sample with strict chain-of-custody or temperature-sensitivity requirements
- A high-value item where physical custody matters as much as speed
- A last-minute replacement part where a single flight delay could shut down an operation
How It's Priced
Hand carry shipments are priced differently from standard Air Freight, because you're not paying for cargo hold space — you're paying for a dedicated person's time, travel, and the flight itself. It's the most expensive tier we offer, and it's built for exactly the scenarios above: when the cost of the service is irrelevant next to the cost of the shipment not arriving.
Air Freight vs Hand Carry — Which Do You Need?
If your shipment can tolerate standard airport handling and still needs to move fast and reliably, Air Express Air Freight is almost always the right call — it's faster to book, more cost-effective, and covers the overwhelming majority of urgent shipments.
If the shipment cannot tolerate a single hand-off, hand carry is the only service built for that requirement.
