Solo Female Travel in India: Free Safety Checklist for Women

Travelling alone can be one of the most rewarding ways to explore India.

You get to choose your own route, your own pace and your own experiences. But travelling solo also means being responsible for things that might otherwise be shared with a companion — planning your arrival, keeping important documents accessible, managing luggage and making sensible decisions when you're tired or unfamiliar with a place.

That's why we created the Solo Women's Travel Safety Checklist — a simple, practical checklist that women can save on their phone or print before their next trip.

What should you check before travelling solo?

1. Before you book

Start with the basics.

Think about whether your destination has established infrastructure for solo travellers, decide how structured you want your itinerary to be, check the appropriate season and set a realistic daily budget.

A little planning before booking can make the actual trip much easier.

2. Before leaving home

This is where preparation really matters.

Our checklist recommends:

  • Booking your first night's accommodation and arrival transport in advance

  • Sharing your itinerary with someone you trust

  • Keeping digital copies of your ID, tickets and hotel bookings available offline

  • Keeping a physical photocopy of your passport or ID separately

  • Splitting payment methods between bags

  • Downloading offline maps

  • Having verified transport and train-booking apps ready

These are small preparations, but they're useful when you're arriving somewhere unfamiliar.

3. Pack so you can manage everything yourself

One of the simplest rules in the checklist is:

Pack light enough that you can carry everything yourself.

Your packing list should also include comfortable broken-in shoes, a secure cross-body or zippered bag, basic first-aid essentials and a fully charged portable charger.

For destinations where clothing requirements vary, having one layer that covers shoulders and knees can also be useful.

4. When you arrive

Whenever your itinerary allows, arriving in daylight can make settling into a new destination easier.

The checklist also recommends registering with your accommodation, keeping the address available in the local language and using verified transport apps rather than street hails, particularly after dark.

India's unified emergency number, 112, should also be saved on your phone.

5. Don't forget the everyday habits

Solo travel isn't only about what you do before leaving.

The checklist recommends keeping a buffer day in your itinerary, avoiding isolated stretches after dark, choosing accommodation with recent reviews from other solo women and keeping valuables to a minimum in crowded environments such as markets, festivals and stations.
