Can You Send a Parcel on a Regular Flight? IndiGo & SpiceJet Counter-to-Counter vs Air Express

Yes — most major Indian airlines, including IndiGo and SpiceJet, offer what's called a counter-to-counter service. You can walk into the cargo counter at the departure airport, hand over your package, and someone at the destination airport can collect it after the flight lands. It's a real, legitimate way to move something fast.

It is also not the same thing as a managed Air Express service — and the gap between the two matters more than most people realize until they're standing at a cargo counter with a deadline.

How Counter-to-Counter Actually Works

You book a slot (subject to availability and cargo space on that specific flight), physically drop the package at the departure airport's cargo/parcel counter a few hours before the flight, and someone — the recipient, or someone they send — has to physically show up at the destination airport's cargo counter to collect it, usually with ID and the airway bill reference.

That's it. There's no pickup from your location, no delivery to the recipient's location, and no tracking beyond "it's on the flight" or "it has landed."

Where Counter-to-Counter Falls Short

No pickup, no delivery. You need to physically get to the airport, and so does your recipient. If either side can't make it during counter hours, the shipment sits.

No door-to-door accountability. Once you hand it over, you're relying on the counter staff and standard cargo handling — the same handling regular checked baggage gets, which means it can be delayed, misrouted, or in rare cases, offloaded for space, the same way we've written about in our piece on what Air Freight actually guarantees.

Limited flight and route options. You're restricted to routes and flights where that specific airline runs a counter-to-counter service — not every route, every airline, or every airport has one.

No white-glove handling for sensitive cargo. Legal documents, lab samples, high-value items — counter-to-counter treats every package the same way. There's no escort, no chain-of-custody documentation, no specialized handling.

Where Air Express Is Different

A managed Air Express service like ours picks up from your door, books guaranteed cargo hold space (not standby space), handles the airway bill and airport formalities on your behalf, and delivers to the recipient's door on the other end — with tracking and accountability the entire way.

For select shipments, we also offer hand carry service, where your package is physically escorted by a person from pickup to delivery on the same flight — useful for the shipments that genuinely cannot afford any hand-off at all.

Which One Should You Use?

If you and your recipient are both comfortable going to the airport, the shipment isn't time-critical to the hour, and you're shipping something low-risk — counter-to-counter can work, and it's usually cheaper.

If you need door-to-door pickup and delivery, guaranteed space instead of standby space, or you're shipping something where a delay or mishandling isn't an option — that's exactly what Air Express is built for.
